"Evolution is as firmly established a scientific fact as the roundness of the Earth.
And yet despite an ever-growing mountain of evidence, most people around the world are not taught the truth about evolution, if they are taught about it at all. Even in the UK, the birthplace of Darwin with an educated and increasingly secular population, one recent poll suggests less than half the population accepts evolution.
For those who have never had the opportunity to find out about biology or science, claims made by those who believe in supernatural alternatives to evolutionary theory can appear convincing. Meanwhile, even among those who accept evolution, misconceptions abound.
Most of us are happy to admit that we do not understand, say, string theory in physics, yet we are all convinced we understand evolution. In fact, as biologists are discovering, its consequences can be stranger than we ever imagined. Evolution must be the best-known yet worst-understood of all scientific theories".
New Scientist pulls out the big guns for evolution.

On the walkway beside the river, across the water from the Tower of London, a member of the British National Party was sneering at a black campaigner for the Green Party who was walking into City Hall's entrance.
"Hey mate, you're in the wrong election - you should be back home in Zimbabwe with Mugabe," said the thug, to laughs from the neo-Nazis standing with him.
About 20 BNP backers had gathered to await the election result and even here, with police and journalists standing within earshot on a night when the BNP were pretending to be a legitimate political force, they could not be bothered to hide the racism that drives them.

Well, well, what a surprise. The BNP being racist. Knock me down with a feather.

"Despite all the attempts at privatization, it turns out that there are some things that don't want to be owned.
Music, water, seeds, electricity, ideas--they keep bursting out of the confines erected around them. They have a natural resistance to enclosure, a tendency to escape, to cross-pollinate, to flow through fences, and flee out open windows". Naomi Klein, Fences and Windows

Green campaigner Peter Tatchell said: "The Greens out-polled Labour in the wards that comprise the Norwich South constituency, which means we are now in a strong position to unseat Charles Clarke at the next general election."

"The British National Party has defended a London councillor who is accused of verbally abusing a local newspaper journalist just days before his party's push for London Assembly seats in next week's local polls.

According to the Ilford Recorder, Barking and Dagenham councillor Bob Bailey, who is a BNP candidate for the London Assembly, called the paper's news editor, Sally Lowe, a "Nazi", a "shit" and said the paper's coverage was "biased bullshit" in a phone conversation earlier today".

I think I'm getting a little too obsessed with Scientology (prompted by the Anonymous protests, next one on May 10th), so much so that I've become intrigued by the latest Tom Cruise rumour.

As if it's not enough that people suggest (scurrilously) that he's gay, and that he's got mild holoprosencephaly (note only three top incisors in the photo), there's a popular suggestion that Suri Cruise isn't Tom's kid.

The rumour goes that Katie Holmes was already pregnant by Chris Klein when TomKat got together, and that the end of Katie Holmes' pregnancy was faked to hide the timings. The suggestion is that Tom is infertile due to holoprosencephaly, or doesn't want to risk birthing a cyclops.

Allegedly they only let the media see baby Suri a few months after her apparent birth, as it would have been obvious she wasn't a newborn earlier. A more lurid suggestion (appearing in Andrew Morton's unauthorised biography) is that Suri was conceived from L. Ron Hubbard's frozen sperm, something Karin Powe, Public Affairs Director of the Church of Scientology was quick to dismiss.

It has also been suggested that Tom Cruise's adopted daughter Isabella bears a striking resemblance to David Miscavige, top bod of Scientology...

Added into this mix is Suri's birth certificate. This was returned late, and it isn't signed by either parent, but by a mysterious 'friend'.

People say the signature is illegible, but blowing it up I thought it looked like "C Jesson". I did some Googling, and there is a Scientologist called Colin Jesson. Surely not a coincidence. There is an Amazon profile for a "C Jesson" who has two children, as does Colin Jesson. C Jesson lives in Santa Ana, not far from Santa Monica where Suri was apparently born. Intriguing...
It's not surprising that the Scientologists may have been involved in the events around Suri's birth, but this is some tantalising potential confirmation.
